Not the Typical Story
John Shufeldt’s story isn’t conventional. He’s a born entrepreneur, having dipped his toes in business ventures since he started selling candles and hand-dipped, homemade chocolates as a child. In his teen years and beyond, he mowed lawns, worked as a bee keeper, drove an ambulance, worked in a factory, owned a chain of hot dog stands, ran a vending machine business with his son, and additionally leased and flew both fixed and rotor wing aircraft. Along the way, he made every mistake in the book and claims to have even invented some.
However, his path changed drastically in 1993 when he opened his first urgent care center, which, was on the cutting edge as a consumer concept at the time. It was no easy venture. To manage and conserve cash, he and his partner worked shifts as Emergency Physicians at night, and treated patients in the clinic during the day. For the first 11 years owning and operating his urgent care practice, he didn’t take a salary.
In 2010, this sacrifice paid off as he took the company to 58 clinics and sold off his portion of the business. Somewhere in the middle, he obtained a Masters in Business Administration while working both his urgent care centers and managing, directing and staffing four different hospital emergency departments.
Upon his exit, he quickly started the telemedicine company, MeMD, a secure portal which connects patients to healthcare providers over the phone or webcam. John continues to gro this business and operate multiple other health and non-healthcare ventures, maintaining his status as an EM Physician and SWAT Team medical director for the Phoenix Police Department.
His Diverse Background.
He has demonstrated leadership traits from the beginning, and although he originally pursued medicine, he followed his passion into multidisciplinary spaces. By the time he earned his MBA, he was already a successful entrepreneur and business owner. He continues to return to the classroom every 10 years, subsequently earning a law degree in 2005 and his Six Sigma Black belt in 2015. He is admitted to the Arizona, Federal and US Supreme Courts.
A Servant Leader.
Unlike many in positions of power, John models his leadership style after the most forward-leaning and humble business leaders. His humility and perseverance come from, as he says, “making every mistake in the book,” and learning that nothing worthy comes easy. As a business owner, he once sold his helicopter (his method of transportation to remote emergency departments) to meet payroll for his employees. He is a true servant leader in every sense of the definition, leading by example, accepting responsibility for team mistakes and giving credit to his team for victories.
John has chaired numerous worthy philanthropic causes in his time, serving for organizations like Colleen’s Dream, Men Against Domestic Violence, Drake Board of Trustees, Sandra Day O’Connor Board of Trustees, _and has filled the role of “good Samaritan” to countless community members and students in need of a mentor.
With his infectious personality, disarming humor and engaging leadership style, he has been invited to speak in hundreds of settings. His speaking experiences include national business summits and conferences, health law and business lectures at the WPA Carey Business School at Arizona State University, courses as an adjunct professor at the Sandra Day O’Conner College of Law, Creighton Medical School and in the Master of Public Health Program at University of Arizona. He also served as television co-host and “Top-Doc” for several years on Arizona’s News Channel 3 morning show. Dr. Shufeldt enjoys interacting with audiences from middle and high school students, to college-aged young adults, and mid-career professionals.
John’s mission is to help individuals discover their passion, and pursue it with tenacity by honing their leadership, interpersonal and business skills. He introduces these topics in his Outlier Series of books, which showcase exceptional outliers in a variety of fields. Each chapter that relates to a trait and or topic of successful leadership like humility, overcoming peer pressure, practicing kindness, perseverance, indefatigably and taking risks.
His leadership and speaking style cultivates a culture of compassionate, positive and humble agents of change, no matter how young or old. Dr. Shufeldt is currently writing the precursor to the Outlier Series, titled LeadershipYOU, which dives deeper into self-leadership and “flipping your switch” to take control of your future.
